Kenneth Geers: Internet increasingly blurs the concept of a nation state

26 March 2015, 12:29

In the future the traditional concept of the nation state will be eroded due to the increasing role of the Internet and, in particular, communication in social networks. However, users of social networks should be more cautious because the information they spread in these networks can be used by hackers, said senior analyst of ZeroFOX, NATO Cyber Centre ambassador, Professor of Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University Kenneth Geers during the 3rd Youth Kyiv Security Forum organized by Arseniy Yatsenyuk Open Ukraine Foundation.

“Everything that used to be in our traditional space has moved to computer life with the beginning of Internet- or cyber era. Everything – from society to politics. And I think that the level of tension will increase as far as in cyber space one can keep in touch with someone who is abroad. In the future the concept of a traditional state will be at stake because no matter what you eat, worship or what language you speak, you can communicate with a person anywhere in the world,” – he said.
Kenneth Geers stressed that the communication, link between people is increasingly moving into the computer-computer format. However, due to this way of communication a problem of interference into computer networks occurs. And, as Geers who was working as an analyst at the Pentagon said, “it is extremely hard to protect oneself”. In addition hackers now more frequently focus their attention on individuals who work in sensitive fields and who, just like all other citizens use various social networks and other online services.
The analyst said that in the current era of flourishing social networks one should be extremely careful using them and protecting his data and correspondence. According to him, the growing popularity of social networks is a ‘golden era’ for spies who “can get lots and lots of information through the Internet network sitting at home with a cup of coffee.”
