Peace in Ukraine will be possible if NATO guarantees security - Anthony Abbott

25 May 2023, 15:01

If Russian President Vladimir Putin had known that all the countries of the free world would assist and support Ukraine, he would not have dared to launch a full-scale invasion.

This was emphasized by Anthony Abbott, the Prime Minister of Australia in 2013-15, at the 15th annual Kyiv Security Forum, established by the Arseniy Yatsenyuk “Open Ukraine” Foundation.

“We all want peace, but there can be no lasting peace without Ukraine’s victory in this genocidal war,” he emphasized.

“I do agree with what former Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk just said. Rascals do bad things and do wickedly when they think they can go unpunished. That is why Putin attacked Ukraine for the second time on February 24 last year, precisely because he believed that he would get away with it and attain an easy victory,” Abbott said.

“Putin failed to understand that, first of all, the Armed Forces and the people of Ukraine would stand up and fight. And, secondly, that all the free countries of the free world will stand ready to assist Ukraine and support the Ukrainian people. If he and his entourage had known before February 24 that Ukraine would be protected not only by its own Ukrainian people, but also by the wider world community, then he would never have dared to act as hi did. All the countries of Europe stood up against this criminal, as if Article 5 of the NATO Charter had been triggered. And peace can be achieved only if NATO guarantees security,” he said.

Anthony Abbott emphasized that all civilized countries demonstrate their solidarity with the Ukrainian people and expressed confidence in Ukraine’s victory.

“Naturally, this can be achieved through our commitments to Ukraine,” he concluded.

The Kyiv Security Forum, established by Arseniy Yatsenyuk’s “Open Ukraine” Foundation, is the main platform in our country to discuss issues of war and peace, national and global security.
