William Browder: Ukraine should adopt its own "Magnitsky Act"

Mr. William Browder, Founder and CEO of Hermitage Capital Management, believes Ukraine should adopt its analogue of sanctions law against Russians involved in human rights violations and money laundering. He stated this during the 12th Kyiv Security Forum organized by the Arseniy Yatsenyuk Open Ukraine Foundation.

“I find it necessary that Ukraine, its Parliament should adopt its “Magnitsky Act”, like in other countries,” Mr. Browder noted. He added that taking into account the crimes committed by Russia against Ukraine's citizens, this step would be quite logical.

Also, Mr. Browder had expressed astonishment that Ukraine does not conduct investigations regarding money laundering by people from the “Magnitsky List”, because there are citizens of Ukraine in the List approved by the United States. “Until now, the Ukrainian authorities have not opened criminal proceedings,” he underlined.

In turn, the Head of the Main Department for International Legal Cooperation of the Prosecutor General's Office Mr. Yevhen Pikalov had noted that Ukraine conducts its own investigations, but he can not make a statement whether they are related to the Magnitsky Act.
