Joachim Schuster: The EU acts on the basis of "more for more" and "less for less"

The European Union acts on the basis of "more for more" and "less for less" and understands itself as a community of values, where democracy and the rule of law, the fight against corruption are central elements.

This was emphasized by the Member of European Parliament (Germany) Joachim Schuster during the 11th Kyiv Security Forum in Kyiv.

"The principle of "more for more" and "less for less" is valid for us. The EU understands itself as a community of values, where democracy and the rule of law, independence from corruption are central elements. If this is ensured, then we will fully comply with our commitments in relation to economic development and social development in Ukraine," he said.

The MEP stressed that the EU emphasizes the combination of economic and political components. In this regard, Ukraine has been given such a tool as the Association Agreement and the FTA, which aims to "strengthening Ukraine's economy, strengthening a rights-based society and democracy".

He had pointed out that the Agreement effectively worked and brought about its achievements, and significant efforts were made by the authorities to implement reforms, to fight corruption. Meanwhile, lately, there had been a slowdown in reforms, especially in the fight against corruption. And this is why the EU had suspended Ukraine's allocation of macro-financial assistance, and the Ukrainian authorities should work more actively in this regard.

"The EU seeks for a closer partnership with Ukraine," Joachim Schuster said.

The annual international event Kyiv Security Forum was launched by the Arseniy Yatsenyuk Foundation Open Ukraine in 2007 as a platform for high-level discussions on the current issues in Europe and the Black Sea region. The Forum aims at increasing security cooperation between the EU and the Black Sea region, raising awareness about regional developments among key regional players, promoting the role of independent and non-governmental actors in setting the security agenda in Europe.

The event is being held with the support of NATO Information and Documentation Center in Ukraine, the German Marshall Fund, The Victor Pinchuk Foundation, The Royal Institute of International Relations, Chatham House (UK), and The Regional Representative Office of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation in Ukraine.
