Andriy Parubiy: North Stream-2 construction will increase risks of Russia's attack on Ukraine

The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Andriy Parubiy is convinced that the construction of the North Stream 2 gas pipeline will increase security risks for Ukraine. Such an opinion he expressed during the 11th Kyiv Security Forum organized by the Arseniy Yatsenyuk Open Ukraine Foundation.

"Ukrainian analysts are convinced that actually the gas transportation system on the territory of Ukraine was one of those factors that in 2014 deterred Mr Putin from a full-scale attack. And we understand that the risk of a full-scale attack can significantly increase if Mr Putin would have alternative sources and alternative ways of supplying energy resources to Western Europe," he said.

According to Parubiy, Western countries should be united in confrontation with Russia.

"The North Atlantic Alliance was and remains the most effective structure in confronting Russian aggression. And I am sure that today the North Atlantic Alliance itself is the force that can and should give an adequate response to the challenges the world facing today," the speaker said.

In his opinion, for today NATO membership is important for Ukraine as well as Ukraine's experience in countering Russia is important for NATO.

Parubiy added that Ukraine is determined to achieve NATO standards, in particular in matters of national security. According to his words, especially, this will be reflected when the Verkhovna Rada completes the draft law on national security.

"For me, it is very important that in the final draft of this law prepared to the second reading all the proposals that we received today from our partners from the EU and from our partners from NATO would be taken into account," the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada stressed.

Also he expressed hope that not only the US, but also the countries of the EU and Canada will decide to provide Ukraine with lethal weapons.

The annual international event Kyiv Security Forum was launched by the Arseniy Yatsenyuk Foundation Open Ukraine in 2007 as a platform for high-level discussions on the current issues in Europe and the Black Sea region. The Forum aims at increasing security cooperation between the EU and the Black Sea region, raising awareness about regional developments among key regional players, promoting the role of independent and non-governmental actors in setting the security agenda in Europe.
