Petro Poroshenko during the 2018 Kyiv Security Forum: Ukraine stops its participation within the CIS

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko said Ukraine intends to cease all relations with the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). With such a statement he addressed during the 11th Kyiv Security Forum, organized by the Arseniy Yatsenyuk Foundation "Open Ukraine".

"Taking into account that Ukraine was never and is not now a CIS member, and taking into account a refusal of this institution to condemn the Russian aggression, I would ask for jointly with the Government to prepare a suggestion on the official termination of our participation in the CIS's statutory bodies," said President Poroshenko.

Also he added that Ukraine's missions at these bodies are planned to be closed.

In addition, the President said that soon he will submit to the Verkhovna Rada a proposal to end unilaterally the operation of certain provisions of so-called "Big Deal" on friendship and cooperation with Russia.

"In particular, the provision on strategic partnership between Ukraine and the Russian Federation, or the provision on bilateral cooperation in the military-technical field, or the provision on cooperation with Russia in ensuring Ukraine's national security would be the case," he said.

At the same time, he underlined it is not a question of rupture of this agreement, because it contains provisions on respect for Ukraine's sovereignty and state integrity.

The annual international event Kyiv Security Forum was launched by the Arseniy Yatsenyuk Foundation Open Ukraine in 2007 as a platform for high-level discussions on the current issues in Europe and the Black Sea region. The Forum aims at increasing security cooperation between the EU and the Black Sea region, raising awareness about regional developments among key regional players, promoting the role of independent and non-governmental actors in setting the security agenda in Europe.

The event is being held with the support of NATO Information and Documentation Center in Ukraine, the German Marshall Fund, The Victor Pinchuk Foundation, The Royal Institute of International Relations, Chatham House (UK), and The Regional Representative Office of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation in Ukraine.
