Barbora Maronkova: «We live in a period when the world order model of next decades is forming»

Today, we all live in a period when the events that are crucial for the formation of the world order model of next decades take place. It was stated during the 5^th Kyiv Security Forum for Youth organized by the Arseniy Yatsenyuk Open Ukraine foundation by the Public Diplomacy Officer at NATO Headquarters Barbora Maronkova.

Speaking of the modern system of international security NATO representative said that it is more complex than the one that was at the time of the great expansion of NATO.

«In the context of the conversation on today's events, I would mention our experience of 15 years ago. The EU expanded, and NATO extended too, there was the cooperation with Russia. And generally, everything doing alright. At the same time, then such words like «Jihad», «Al-Qaeda», «Islamic terrorism»  were household words. And then we had an important task on the realization of what kind of world we want to live in and how to respond to these challenges and threats», - Barbora Maronkova said.

«However, today we live in a more complex international security environment. This is the period when the trust for fundamental institutions is checked when the world order we inherited from our predecessors is discredited. Also is an interesting time when on the one hand, there are countries that are ready for anything to become members of the EU and NATO and on the other one last year we witnessed when one of the countries expressed a desire to leave the European Union. At the same time, fortunately for us, today no one wants to leave NATO. Yes, there are certain statements, especially from the US side, that NATO today is «heavy» institution, that European members do not allocate enough money for defense, etc. Also, there is too much speculation on whether the US will continue committed to transatlantic security. But in a conversation with NATO Secretary General new US administration assured him that the US is committed to further transatlantic security. This is very good news for us because the world situation is very tense», - NATO representative said.
