Poroshenko: Discussion in the UN on the issue of peace-keeping in Donbass will reveal those who want peace and those who want war
Consideration at the UN Security Council of the issue concerning referral of a peacekeeping mission to Ukraine is an indicator that will reveal those who want peace and those who want war, said the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko in his speech during the opening of the 8th Kyiv Security Forum organized by the Arseniy Yatsenyuk Open Ukraine Foundation.
“The old forms and formats of security that were developed immediately after World War II, won’t work. Then a mechanism of the Security Council was elaborated. But it does not work when one of the permanent members of the Security Council becomes an aggressor able to use veto to block any efficient measures that worked before. And that is why I submitted the issue on peace-keepers for the consideration of the Security Council. That will become an indicator that
will show the world who wants peace and who wants war,” – he said.
The President stressed that Ukraine was and remains an advocate of peaceful settlement, strictly adhering to Minsk agreements. Thus, Poroshenko underscored, there is no internal conflict in Ukraine but there is an external aggression, in resisting to which, in particular, the Ukrainian people became united as never before.
The President pointed out that the leadership of Russia can not properly have control over their territories that constitute 1/6 of the planet’s land; nevertheless it tries to deprive Ukraine of its territory. “More than a year Ukraine is living in the circumstances of the annexation of the Crimea, in terms of aggression by Russia at the east, more than a year we face the challenges aimed at the destruction of our country. I emphasize again, the aggressor did not need the Crimea. Aggressor has 1/6 of the land of our planet, and sorry for frankness, it often can not properly cope with its territories,” – he said.
According to Poroshenko, the aggressor needs the entire Ukraine – “weak, destabilized with discredited European values and ideas, with discredited people who found the strength to participate in the EuroMaidan".
