Bogdan KLICH

Senator, Senate of the Republic of Poland, Minister of Defence, Ministry of National Defence (2007-2011), Member of European Parliament (2004-2007)

Graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the Cracow Medical Academy (1986), from the Faculty of Philosophy and History at the Jagiellonian University (1987), and completed doctoral studies at this faculty (1995). After graduation Mr. Klich has worked as a doctor in Cracow hospitals – Rydgier Hospital and Babiński Hospital. Since 1978 he was an opposition activist and cooperated with the Student Committee of Solidarity. He was one of the founders of the Independent Students Association and was active within its underground structures. In the second half of the 1980s he was a founding member and activist in the “Wolność and Pokój” (Freedom and Peace) movement. From 1988 to 1990 he was the editor-in-chief of an independent magazine “Tumult”. From 1990 until 1992 he managed the Information Department at State TV Centre in Cracow. Between 1993 and 1999 was the Head of the International Centre for Development of Democracy in Cracow, which was later converted into the Institute for Strategic Studies. In 1998 and 1999 he was an Adviser to the government plenipotentiary for Poland’s accession negotiations with the European Union. In 1999–2000 Mr. Klich held the position of the Deputy Minister of National Defence, and between 2007 and 2011 – of the Minister of National Defence. In the Fourth Term Sejm he was a deputy chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee and he also worked in the National Defence Committee. In the European Parliament chaired the Committee on Belarus and was a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Security and Defence Committee. Mr. Klich is Member of the Civic Platform Party of Poland and of its national council.
